If you hope to win the school science and then go on to regional competition, there are more rules and regulations. Follow this link to read them.
Overview and Scientific Method

Idea Generation
1. Read about what makes a GOOD topic/question.
2. Read about what makes a BAD topic/question.
4. Science Buddies has a Topic Wizard that you can use, but BE CAREFUL. You may use their idea, but YOU MAY NOT USE THEIR PROCEDURES, MATERIALS, etc.
5. Talk to your family about your ideas! Do not wait to get them involved!
6. By August 20th, submit THREE possible ideas via Google Classroom assignment.
1. Read about what makes a GOOD topic/question.
2. Read about what makes a BAD topic/question.
- Note: Although this says Consumer Testing isn't a good topic, you may do that for your project if:
- You can investigate some of the science ideas about it.
- You understand that this won't likely be a Regional Science Fair contender.

Question
1. Use the feedback I've given you, and the checklist on the project proposal form to make your final decision. 2. Look at the rubric to see how you will be graded. Make sure you are meeting all the requirements. 3. Turn in the signed Project Proposal form during homeroom on Monday, August 27. (BOTH partners must turn this form!) 4. Turn in the Partner Contract during homeroom on Monday August 27 if you want to work with a partner.

Preparing for Research
You will be writing a 2-4 paragraph paper that allows the reader to understand the science behind your experiment and allows you to create a hypothesis.
Research AROUND your topic. You do NOT want to find the answer to your question before you do your experiment!
Research Plan

Research Plan
- Read about how to make a research plan. Make sure you look at all the tabs.
- Use the "Question Words Table" to help develop possible questions to research.
- Get rid of irrelevant questions.
- Create a research plan that follows the format of the "Sample Plan."
- Look at the rubric to see how you will be graded.
- By Sept 4th, submit your research plan on Google Classroom.

Bibliography Worksheet
- Read about how to find good sources of information. Make sure you look at all tabs.
- Find at least 3 sources that will help you with your research. At least one must be an offline source. (We will have a day in the library.) *** If you used a Science Buddies Project Idea, you will may not use their BACKGROUND page as a source.***
- Complete the Bibliography Worksheet to the best of your ability. (You won't be able to find everything it asks for for every resource.)
- I will be checking this for completion during class on Sept 10, but will not be collecting it. You will use it to write your bibliography.

Research Paper and Bibliography
You will be writing a 2-4 paragraph paper that allows the reader to understand the science behind your experiment and allows you to create a hypothesis.
Research AROUND your topic. You do NOT want to find the answer to your question before you do your experiment!
The biggest issue with research papers is PLAGIARISM. You already know not to copy-and-paste other people's work. But you also can't use their sentences and just change a word or two. The sentences need to be yours! I suggest you read the whole resource, put it away so you can't see it, and think about how you would explain the important info to a friend.
What about using quotation marks? These are only acceptable if something really needs to be written word for word. Usually, I see students use quotations because they don't understand the topic enough to put it into their own words. Don't do that! Take the time to understand what is going on. It's okay to use more than 3 resources, just make sure you include it in your bibliography. Most likely, you won't need quotes for this paper. If you do use them, I expect in-line citations (see the Science Buddies site) and a longer paper. You need to have plenty of your own words.
Plagiarism will result in a ZERO for this assignment.

- Note: The requirements for this paper are less than those of the Science Buddies site, which is why I haven't linked to it. However, their information is good and correct. If you hope to go on to high levels of competition, you may want to follow their guidelines.

Experiment and Data Collection
This is what we have been waiting for!
This is what we have been waiting for!
- Make a table or chart to record data in.
- Practice safety. Have an adult around, but make sure you are the one doing the experiment.
- Take pictures. Lots and lots of pictures.
- RECORD DATA. Be as detailed as possible. You can't go back later if you didn't get some information you need.
Data Analysis, Graphs, Conclusion

Conclusion
Due November 13, 2018, whether you have science class that day or not. IF YOU CAN, please turn in on Google Classroom. If that isn't working, email it to me ([email protected]) Or, bring it in hard-copy NOV 13 and turn in during homeroom. Rubric
Please keep in mind, I expect you to thoroughly read the Science Buddies pages I have linked to. You should check out every tab and closely examine the samples they provide.

Abstract
- Read all about it.
- This is basically a summary of your project which MUST be 250 words or less. I WILL NOT GRADE IT UNLESS IT IS 250 WORDS OR LESS!
- To get Google Docs to count the words for you
- Highlight the part you want counted. (Not the title, or your name, or the rubric.)
- Got to "Tools" at the top of the top of the page.
- Choose "word count."
- It will show something like Words 241 of 263.
- As long as the first number in that line is 250 or less, you are fine.
- This will be turned in on Google Classroom by Nov 19 or emailed ([email protected]) or hard copy during homeroom on Nov 19.
